Special Offer
We offer free box delivery throughout Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, Medford and the surrounding areas. If you hire us for your local and long-distance relocation, you will only pay for the boxes you used.
The general rule of thumb is “what fits in a box goes in a box”. The better prepared our customers are, the quicker and easier the move will be for everyone. Be thorough and give yourself MORE than enough time to pack up your belongings, and also use the occasion to sort through and throw out what you don't need.
Often our clients make the mistake of underestimating what is involved in correct prep and packing, then rushing through the process and not sorting and organizing properly. This results in us moving items that are often thrown away at the client's new residence. Certainly, this is something you can avoid!
Important Reminders
- 1 Plan how you will pack. Pack items first that you don't use often.
- 2 You can start packing slowly as soon as you find out that you’re moving.
- 3 Never pack flammable items or unallowable items. Ask our office for help if you're not sure about this.
- 4 Use generous amounts of paper inside the carton on the top and especially at the bottom to provide good cushioning.
- 5 List contents and room on the outside of the carton on more than one side.
- 6 List contents and room on the outside of the carton on more than one side.
- 7 Mark "Fragile" clearly on the outside of cartons when applicable.
- 8 Mark "Fragile" clearly on the outside of cartons when applicable.
- 9 Use clean newsprint paper. We stock this in 25 lb. bundles and we offer free delivery of all our materials. You can check our supplies list. Old newspapers may rub off ink onto your items so if you’re working with them, please use them carefully.
- 10 Label cartons containing essential items such as cooking utensils, toiletries, etc. with “Open First.”
- 11 Separate the breakable and nonbreakable.
- 12 Pack all cartons tightly but don't overpack. Heavier, denser items such as books should be packed into smaller boxes; larger and lighter items should go into boxes of corresponding sizes.
- 13 Use professional packing tape. Masking tape isn't strong enough to support fully packed cartons. Packing tape is preferred and always in stock. PLEASE do not make the mistake of folding in corners to seal a box. This often happens, and our crew often has to take the time to repack and re-tape your boxes closed.
- 14 BEFORE putting anything in a box, make sure the bottom of the box is secured by folding in the box leaves and placing 2 or 3 strips of tape covering the entire length of the seam where the leaves meet. You can never put too much tape on a box!
- 15 Play some music or put the radio on while you pack—you will be happy you did!
Let Us Help You
If you ever get stuck, run out of materials, or have a question, don't hesitate to call our office for advice or a little direction. We are professional movers, after all! You can be sure that whatever your question is, we have fielded it before, and we will be able to answer it.
Chinaware
Use clean sheets of newsprint paper to carefully wrap china. Place the paper in the bottom of an appropriately sized box for cushioning. Wrap each piece individually, then with a double layer of paper, wrap up to three in a bundle. Place these bundled items in the carton in a row on edge, not flat!
After that, surround each bundle with crushed paper. Be careful not to leave any unfilled spaces. To protect the rims and make a level base for the next tier, just add two or three inches of crushed paper on top of the bundle. You can use horizontal cardboard dividers to help keep the layers level. Heavier ceramics should go at the bottom of the boxes; smaller plates, saucers, and shallow bowls can make up a second layer. Wrap and pack them in the same way as larger items.
Silverware
Silver should be nested together and wrapped within a three-sheet thick piece of paper. If you have a silver chest, you may use this to hold the wrapped cutlery. This should then be wrapped in paper and boxed. Always remember to put these on top of other boxes of kitchenware.
Soft Goods
Pillows and beddings are packed in linen or large cartons separated by layers of clean paper.
Shoes and Other Footwear
Pack shoes in their original shoebox if possible, and place them in a carton. If shoeboxes are not available, wrap them individually to prevent abrasive damage.
Clothes
Clothes should be left on hangers and hung in special wardrobe cartons. Our crew usually carries four of these wardrobe boxes as standard. If you need more, let us know ahead of time.
Lampshades and Bases
Handle lampshades by their wireframes only and place them in a carton lined with paper. Surround the shade with protective paper. You can nest shades inside each other as long as you separate them with paper. As for the bases, you should wrap them in extra paper and pack them in separate boxes from the shades.
Stereos and Other Electronics
If possible, pack electronics in their original cartons. As long as proper packing materials are used (bubble wrap, newsprint, foam sheeting, comforters/blankets, pillows, etc.), these devices can be safely packed in sturdy boxes. You can follow this process:
- 1 Pad the bottom of the carton to serve as a cushion.
- 2 Wrap electronic with paper and place in the carton.
- 3 Prevent damage by tightly packing padding around and on top of the device.
- 4 Then, seal the carton firmly with tape.
- 5 Label the carton as “Fragile - Top Load.”
Books
Place books on end in the carton, alternating the spine and open side of the book. To prevent them from sticking together, place a piece of paper between each book. Since they are heavy, Nick's Moving Company has a small book carton to make them easier to carry.
Statuary and Figurines
Use bubble wrap for statuary and figurines before wrapping them snuggly with clean paper. You can also use clean paper to wrap the article if there is no bubble wrap, but please make sure that the item is adequately cushioned.
Mirrors and Glass
Use a generous cushion of clean paper to wrap glass picture frames and mirrors. Then, place them in a flattened packing or telescoping carton. Make sure that they are standing on their edge and not laid flat. After this, tape and seal the carton carefully.
Computers
Like other electronic devices, computers and laptops should be packed in their original cartons. It is also safe to pack them on sturdy boxes as long as proper packing materials are used (bubble wrap, newsprint, foam sheeting, comforters/blankets, pillows, etc.). Follow these steps:
- 1 Pad the bottom of the carton generously to serve as the cushion for the device.
- 2 Use paper to wrap computer parts before placing them in the carton.
- 3 Prevent damage by tightly packing padding around and on top of the device.
- 4 Seal the carton firmly.
- 5 Lastly, label the carton as "Fragile - Top Load." Be aware of special considerations for the internal workings of the computer.
